As kids, we’re told something and we grow up to believe it without even bothering to cross check it’s authenticity. To our surprise, we all have been considering some baseless facts to be true since nobody ever tried to reason out.
There are several facts which are imbibed in us from childhood but are actually not true.
In this post, the team of Funniest Indian brings for a list of 10 biggest lies told in the history of India, which for some weird reasons managed to gain our trust.
Varanasi- The oldest inhabited city in the world.
Varanasi is undoubtedly one of the oldest city but 30 other cities were inhabited before Varanasi in 1100 BC. Luxor city in the ancient Egypt was inhabited in 3200 BC.

Mahatma Gandhi photographed partying:
The man in this viral photo is an Australian actor and not Bapu. This photo was circulated as a political propaganda but the man in picture resembles so much to Gandhiji that anyone could fall for the rumour.

Hindi is the national language of India
Remember mugging up this fact back in our school days? As a matter of fact, India has no official language but Hindi is the most spoken language in India. We have a total of 23 official languages and Hindi is one of them.

Hockey is the national game of India.
Thanks to our textbooks which led us to believe on it. But an RTI reply has totally turned down this belief.

Ayodhya has been there since Ramayana days.
The modern day town of Ayodhya was actually set up by King Vikramaditya with the aim to recreate the mystical age of Ramayana. The temple of Nageshwarnath, established by Kush, son of Rama was the only thing to survive when Ayodhya got abandoned. This temple helped Vikramaditya recognize the city.

“An eye for an eye would leave the whole world blind” – Mahatma Gandhi.
If you are also one of those who thought Gandhi ji gave this fancy one-liner, then you definitely need to give you a reality check. It was Ben Kingsley who said this line in the 1985 Oscar winning movie ‘Gandhi’. Since, there’s no record of it being the very own words of Gandhi ji, let’s give some credit to the poor dialogue-writer

India was disqualified from FIFA World Cup 1950 because players insisted on playing barefoot.
India made it to FIFA 1950 after four teams backed out from participating. But since, the tour to Brazil was a costly affair and AIFF had no trust in the potential of Indian players to stand up against Italy, it cancelled the tour and cooked this news to escape the embarrassment. Yup! That’s the story.

Milkha Singh looked back in his 400m race in Rome Olympics
As per the common belief, Milkha looked back during his race which ultimately costed him a medal but the actual footage showed that he never looked back. In fact he was in the leading three for sometime in the beginning of the race but was soon pushed to 4th position.
With great zest and efforts, he secured fourth position and God knows how this dramatic rumor managed to pop up.

UNESCO has declared ‘Jana Gana Mana’ as the best national anthem in the world.
In March 2016, a message claiming the same began circulating on Facebook. It was a reiteration of a similar rumor that originated in 2008 and was widely shared via mails. In fact, the Chief, Editorial, UNESCO has also clarified that they are aware of several blogs in India reporting this story, but UNESCO has made no such announcement concerning the anthem of India or any country. Thank goodness, this hoax didn’t go down in the history books.

India has been a secular country since 1947.
In the heads of Indians, it may be, but technically, India became secular on papers in 1976 only when an amendment was made in our Indian Constitution and the word ‘secular’ was added to its preamble and other sections.
