Washington, Jan 23, 2026 — US President Donald Trump has announced that a large American military force is en route toward Iran, emphasising that the United States is monitoring developments in the Islamic republic “very closely.”
Speaking to journalists aboard Air Force One as he returned from the World Economic Forum in Davos, the president said, “We have a lot of ships going that direction, just in case… we have a big force going toward Iran.” Trump described the deployment as an “armada” and a “massive fleet,” but added that he hoped it would not need to be deployed in combat.
Trump reiterated that the show of force is meant as a precautionary measure amid Iran’s violent crackdown on widespread protests. He claimed earlier US pressure had helped stop nearly 840 planned executions of demonstrators — a charge that has sparked international debate. The president also stated that he remains open to diplomatic talks with Tehran despite the heightened military posture.
Iranian authorities this week released an official protest-related death toll of more than 3,100, although rights groups have suggested that the actual figure could be significantly higher. The unrest has drawn sharp international criticism and raised concerns about further escalation.
While Trump stressed that the United States hopes “maybe we won’t have to use it,” the announcement underscores persistent tensions between Washington and Tehran. Recent reporting suggests that the US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and accompanying warships may be part of the repositioned forces heading toward the Middle East.
The move comes against the backdrop of broader geopolitical friction, including Iran’s nuclear ambitions and ongoing protests inside the country. Trump’s comments signal that the US is balancing both military readiness and diplomatic options as it confronts the evolving crisis.
